The Charles D. Smith, Jr. Foundation Education Center
conducts several special events throughout the year.
These fundraising events support the local communities in which they are
held and provide the Foundation with
needed revenue to support its ongoing projects and benevolence. The CDSF
created “SWING WITH THE STARS”
Celebrity Golf Tournament in 1989 as a means of bringing celebrities and
top athletics in the world together in a
special competition. “Grand Slam Celebrity Softball Jam” is
a unique benefit Softball Game that showcases a
group of athletes and celebrities each year in an effort to raise funds
for youth-driven charities based in Bridgeport,
Connecticut and it’s service areas.
People’s Bank and the Charles D. Smith Jr. Foundation
are collaborating to create a community award in honor of
community activist and former City Council member Shirley Bean. The “Shirley
Bean Leadership Award”, recognizing
a person whom has demonstrated strong commitment to the improving and
protecting his or her community. A
charitable donation is made to an organization selected by the honoree.
The IBM/Charles D. Smith, Jr. Foundation
Technology Expo is to motivate, inspire and encourage kids to use technology
to achieve their lifetime dreams.
Established in 2003 as a means to create opportunities to enhance the
growth and awareness of technology to
youth. IBM and CDSF activities are to challenge participants to strive
for excellence through education and provide
opportunities and information for positive lifestyle choices. With a commitment
to make significant strides in bridging
the digital divide for low-income families in the community and for sure
with the students that the Foundation serves
and support.
